The energy pours off his body and envelops the audience, who return the energy in hopes that it will prolong the experience. His harmonica can be flirtatious, unique, spontaneous – the sound that punctuates the joy he feels and then bestows upon his listeners. As he is ending the show, he begins a little dance — hands behind his back, he is all over the stage, is almost to the wings and returns, sings a bit more, dances off and then comes back and blows on his harp, often falling to his knees and bringing us to our knees as well. Too soon he is dancing his way backstage. After a quick shirt change, and a swig of water he returns to the stage to give us an encore. He gives us our money’s worth and a bit of lagniappe as well.

He gives the impression that he is totally charmed with his fans. He stands at the merchandise table until everyone has a chance to greet him, get something signed and a quick picture with him. Many will purchase items just to have an excuse for another autograph or a reason to tell him how much they have enjoyed his music. A little merchandising genius.

As I watched Taylor walk alone up the stairs I had the impression of someone who has laid himself bare, and that every ounce of his energy has been given to his fans.

On April 19, 2010 Taylor Hicks sent a message from his twitter account: “I did something really cool today!”. And he did; Taylor recorded a new song titled SOS (“Save My Body, Save My Soul”) on that same day.

The song was written by Genevieve Rose, Ambassador, SOS Children’s Villages-USA to enhance awareness of children in need worldwide. SOS is the world’s largest charity dedicated to orphaned and abandoned children. The charity works for children in 132 countries all over the world.

Produced by the team at Forge Recording in Oreland, PA, the song will soon be released to the public. The following audio clip offers a brief preview of the song track, and of the Taylor Hicks delivery that songwriter Rose portrays as “beautiful” and “soulful”.

Both the songwriter and the Forge team are delighted with the finished recording, and describe Taylor Hicks as an enthusiastic contributor who was both personable and professional in studio. Mr. Hicks is excited to headline an upcoming concert on September 26th at the Kimmel Center/Verizon Hall in Philadelphia where he will perform the SOS song live.

Country singer, sausage king Jimmy Dean dead at 81

Jimmy Dean, the Grammy winning country singer who made an even bigger name for himself as the face of the eponymous sausage company, has died at his home in Varina, Va.

The 81-year-old was watching television with his wife, Donna Dean, when he died.

He was best known musically for his signature hit “Big Bad John,” but Dean also hosted an ABC variety show “The Jimmy Dean Show,” was the first guest host on “The Tonight Show” and the first country entertainer to perform on the Las Vegas strip.

Dean was named a 2010 Country Music Hall of Fame inductee.

In 1969, he launched the Jimmy Dean Meat Company which he ran until it was sold to Sara Lee Foods in 1984. After the sale he remained the company’s chairman and TV spokesperson.

According to the Country Music Hall of Fame website, Dean was born Aug. 10, 1928 in Olton, Texas. He grew up in poverty and had only a ninth-grade education.

“He honed his performing skills in the late 1940s by entertaining his fellow servicemen at Bolling Air Force Base, near Washington, D.C. After his discharge in 1948 he assembled his band, the Texas Wildcats, and worked Washington area clubs, fire halls, and lodges,” the site read.

In addition to his wife, Dean is survived by two sons, Garry and Robert; a daughter, Connie; and two grandchildren,

Donna Dean told the Associated Press her husband’s services will be private.
